As your child grows, the clock becomes a useful learning tool to help them tell the time, the most important one being what time they go to bed or DON'T get up in the morning!! According to the UK government’s numeracy strategy guidelines, children should be able to reach these milestones:Reception class children should be beginning to read the time to the hour, Children in Year 1 (age 5-6) should be able to read the time to the hour or the half hour on analogue clocks, Year 2 children (age 6-7) should be able to read the time to the hour, half hour or quarter hour on analogue clocks. When a child has their own personalised clock with their name on they will love to learn to tell the time. Here are some tips to help you teach your child to learn how to tell the time. Below is a list of skills that a child will need to develop for telling the time eventually, as well as some activities to do that will help develop these skills. 1. Recognise numbers: up to 12 for analogue clocks and up to 59 for digital clocks Activities: Draw a face, dot-to-dot 2. Understand units for measuring time: A child must know that there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day and have some understanding on how long these units of time are. 3. Count in fives up to sixty 4. Understand simple fractions: quarter, half Activities: fold paper into quarters, cut sandwiches, apples etc. into fractions 5. Understand digital and analogue clocks 6. Understand that time passes:This includes days, weeks, months, years as well as seconds, minutes and hours. When you child can tell the time they will love to look at their personalised clock.
